TURKEY
Why:  Turkey is East meets West, old vs. new. You’ve been there, done that with Europe—now kick it up a notch by exploring this rapidly modernizing, yet culturally rich land.
What to do:  Go hot air ballooning over Cappadocia, sail in a gulet off the Turquoise Coast, explore the ruins of the ancient city of Ephesus and the Hagia Sofia in Istanbul.
Where to stay: In Istanbul, the Four Seasons Sultanahmet.  For a truly unique experience, stay at the Cave Hotel Gamiraisu, where rooms are carved out of the soft volcanic stone.
When to go:  April or May, to take advantage of the climate and to beat the summer crowds.

JAPAN
Why: Japan is so much more than bullet trains and ramen noodles. Its mix of modern marvels, natural beauty, and intricate cultural history will leave you wondering why you didn’t go sooner.
What to do:  Go ice diving off the Izu Peninsula (or try warmer waters near Okinawa).  Take in a tea ceremony, watch a sake brewer demonstrate his craft, or eat sushi, tofu and grilled eel at a baseball game.
Where to stay:  Tokyo’s newest ultra-luxury hotel, Shangri-La.
When to go:  Cherry blossom season lasts from March to mid-April, depending on latitude, but fall foliage season (late September-November) is equally photogenic.  Avoid the Golden Week holiday in May as domestic travel will be heavy during this period.

ICELAND
Why:  Iceland has become notorious in recent years, but it’s out with the old, in with the new with this quirky campaign to revamp tourism.  There are some good deals and unique experiences to be found.
What to do:  Go on a 4WD glacier tour, bathe in the hot springs, go sport fishing, learn how to pronounce Eyjafjallajökull.
Where to stay:  Hotel Borg in Reykjavik.
When to go:  Near the spring or autumn equinox to maximize your chances of seeing the Northern Lights.
