It's Earth Day, and we've rounded up some of the best ways our friends in the travel industry are working to keep our planet green.
- Travelers are encouraged to replace their plastic water bottles with reuseable ones to help protect some of the world’s prime travel destinations. A number of hotels, airports, and local tourist agencies have launched initiatives to limit the plastic pileups.
- Boeing tweeted this week that its new 787 final assembly factory in North Charleston, South Carolina (left) will be powered by solar energy. This will be the sixth-largest solar installation in the U.S.
- Four Seasons Hotels and Resorts announced a global initiative to plant 10 million trees in celebration of its 50th anniversary. Their new website, Living Values, chronicles this effort as well as their other sustainability programs.
- Continental & United celebrate Earth Day by encouraging its passengers to use paperless boarding passes. For each person who uses a paperless boarding pass, they’ll donate a dollar to to Conservation International’s “Protect an Acre” program. (Tip: mobile boarding passes work best if you go to Settings and turn up the brightness on your phone.)
- Read about the ways various cruise lines are working to save power and reduce waste out at sea.
