The Boeing 787 Dreamliner

Fuel efficient, a quiet interior, a sleek design: the newest luxury automobile to hit the market? No, it’s the Boeing 787 Dreamliner, the shiniest new bird in the sky. It’s in the news these days, having completed a crucial round of certification testing, as airlines announce dates of first flights.

Japan’s All Nippon Airlines will be the first to put the Dreamliner in business (and they’re offering a chance to win tickets!) with flights between Tokyo and Frankfurt. Delivery to U.S. carrier United Airlines will take place early next year, and a direct route from Houston to Auckland, New Zealand will commence soon thereafter.

Aside from the unprecedented fuel efficiency of this aircraft, which allows it to fly further non-stop than any other commercial aircraft, the Dreamliner boasts a number of new features that brings a new degree of comfort  and almost futuristic touches to flying. One cool aspect is the shadeless windows that can be “dimmed” with the touch of a button. The plane will seat 234-296 passengers in a state-of-the-art interior that will feature easy access for those with mobility issues, LED lighting, and HEPA air filters. Ultimately, seating configurations and other design choices will be left to the individual airlines.

As construction continues and new routes are announced, we’re excited to fly the new Dreamliner and see if it will live up to the hype. But best of all, with its ability to offer more non-stop long-haul flights, the new plane will let us get where we’re going faster than ever before!
