Poronui

If you're looking for something a little different, perhaps something a little more "back country," then Poronui is an absolute must when visiting the North Island of New Zealand. With 16,000 acres of total wilderness, this luxury retreat boasts world renowned fly fishing and hunting, along with opportunities for hiking, archery, riflery, and a myriad of other outdoor activities. But Poronui has much more than just outdoor recreation to offer (as our group quickly discovered), as the accommodations deserve some individual attention, as well.

Surrounded by seven freestanding guest cabins, Poronui Lodge is at the very heart of the property. Here, guests can enjoy homemade breakfasts, curl up with a good book and enjoy an open fire, or utilize the fully equipped fly-tying bench in preparation for the day's fly fishing adventures. From the moment you step inside, the charming rustic-style decor, crackling fire in the fireplace, and friendly and charming staff there to welcome you will make you feel right at home.

For a truly unique experience, consider staying a night or two at Poronui's Safari Camp. Located right on the edge of the Mohaka River, the camp offers an authentic outdoor experience without having to sacrifice any modern comforts or conveniences. The camp includes two accommodation tents with canvas roofs and timber floors and walls, providing the tent-like feel with the lodge-like protection from the elements.  There is also a separate amenities tent where you can prepare your meals on gas-powered hotplates, utilize flush toilets, and enjoy a hot shower. What a way to camp!

Our group had the honor of staying at the stunning Blake House, the accommodations to top all accommodations. With a sleeping capacity of sixteen adults, this magnificent lodge has two great rooms (each with two huge fireplaces), a fully equipped kitchen, large patio with gas grill, and absolutely breathtaking views of the property. With complete privacy, you may enjoy the Blake House however you please, whether fully catered (complete with chef) or self-catered, whether for business or for pleasure.

From outdoor activities to accommodations, it seems no matter what your preference, Poronui has something to offer. And with its natural, beautiful surroundings and true "make yourself at home" feel, it's easy to understand why none of us wanted to leave this wonderful wilderness retreat!
