Travel Then and Now

In this age of YouTube, DVRs, iPhone video cameras, and live webcams, it's a simple thing to Google the name or a city street, a ski slope, or a cruise ship, and get an instant first-person view of what is happening, often in high-def and usually live.

Apparently, the desire to record everything isn't a new obsession at all: the Travel Film Archive has launched a YouTube channel that takes us back in time with films from as far back as the 1910s. See how previous generations of travelers experienced Europe, the beaches of Hawaii,  and the exotic Far East, before the tendrils of globalization spread that far. You can even breathe in the nostalgia of old-school airline ads or sneak a peek into someone's family vacation videos.

If you find yourself getting wistful about the good ol' days of travel and family summer vacations on the lake, just console yourself by thinking about the evolution of the swimsuit.
